Special Congress Called Over Skorts Issue In Camogie As Protests Make Their Mark

Special Congress Called Over Skorts Issue In Camogie As Protests Make Their Mark

The Camogie Association has called a special congress to consider the motion to provide players with the choice to wear shorts or skorts while playing camogie.

Dublin and Kilkenny players protested for the right to wear shorts during their Leinster championship clash on Saturday. Players from both sides warmed up in shorts but changed back into to skorts before throw-in so the game could go ahead, but their point had been made.

The debate has been front and centre all week with players from Dublin clubs breaking rank and wearing shorts in their games during the week.

Waterford and Cork announced last night they will wear shorts for their Munster final clash on Saturday and won't be changing.

"We will not be making any further media comment ahead of the game as our concentration is focussed on putting on our best possible performance," they said in a statement released by the GPA.

"We will be at The Ragg in Tipperary with the intention of getting the better of each other on the field of play.

"We will be togged out wearing shorts.

"That is our choice."

The Camogie Association has since released a statement to say the matter will be debated at a special congress in Croke Park on May 22. If the vote is passed, then players will be allowed to wear shorts in time for the rest of this year's camogie championship.

"The special congress is being called to consider the motion(s) to provide all players with the choice to wear skorts or shorts while playing camogie," the association said in a statement this morning.

St Vincent's senior camogie team wore shorts rather than skorts in their game on Tuesday night.

It adds: "The Association had proposed to deal with this issue at next year’s Congress but having listened to player feedback, the Association recognises that waiting until 2026 is not acceptable for many.

"Although similar motions did not pass at the 2024 Congress, the Association is committed to representing the voices of players who wish to have a choice in their playing attire. If the motion(s) passes, the new rule(s) - allowing the option to wear skorts or shorts - would take effect from May 24th 2025."
