In many ways, this is a free hit for the USA. They are not expected to win and can just go out there and play their game.

But so far the evidence is clear. The European side is simply better equipped to deal with a golf course that was being billed before the tournament as one of the hardest in all of America.

Still early days, but this could get seriously embarrassing for Keegan Bradley and America. We could all be in bed (or on the champagne) by 9pm here.

Scottie Scheffler is currently on for a golden duck. Who could have predicted that?

Matthew Abbott

Ludvig Aberg is now 1Up on Patrick Cantlay through two holes in match five. That blue on the board is cancelled out by Xander Schauffele, who is 1Up on Jon Rahm after their opening hole after a bogey from the Spaniard.

Team Europe captain Luke Donald said to Sky Sports:

Yeah, he started stiffening up yesterday morning, and tried to go out in the afternoon. Got worse and worse. Went to get an MRI last night, was just really very stiff this morning. He tried to get through his warm-up, but just couldn't play. So he's devastated, he's gutted. He wanted to go out there and represent Team Europe. It's very, very unfortunate.

Peter Drury comparing the tetchy atmosphere at St James' Park during Newcastle United vs Arsenal to "a game of golf in New York" led to Gary Neville replying:

It's different than a game of golf in New York, the people up here have got manners.

Team Europe now need just two-and-a-half points from the singles to win this year's Ryder Cup, and only two will be enough to retain their title. Justin Rose is out first for them up against Cameron Young.

JR had been just amazing this week. Something I talked to him quite a while about going No. 1 potentially, no matter what the scenario. I think we have seen how well he played the last couple days, and I'm excited to see him go out number one. That's a big honour.

US captain Keegan Bradley needs a Ryder Cup miracle and hopes he can help inspire one by frontloading his team.

Cameron Young kicks things off before leaders Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau, and Scottie Scheffler look to make a difference.

It's not been enough so far.

Scott Trotter

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy go up against each other later today, and it is not only their quality that makes their meeting so significant, however.

The tie marks the first time since 2014 that two reigning major champions face off in Ryder Cup singles. Martin Kaymer (U.S. Open) beat Bubba Watson (Masters) 4 & 2 at Gleneagles.

Tommy Fleetwood is having some Ryder Cup.

The Southport star has been part of earning four points for Team Europe.

That's only half a point less than the entirety of the USA's team.

Team USA's captain, Keegan Bradley: "Well, I'm seeing what looks like to be historical putting. They're making everything. They're a great team. They're great players. They're a tough team to beat."
