Report: Some In Mayo Unhappy Over Appointment Of Former Star As U20s Manager

Report: Some In Mayo Unhappy Over Appointment Of Former Star As U20s Manager

After a few disappointing seasons, it is fair to say that Mayo are attempting to shake things up in an effort to return to the county to football's top table.

Andy Moran has been appointed as the new manager of the senior team after a long interview process. It was clearly felt that the 41-year old was the ideal replacement for Kevin McStay after his impressive spells with Leitrim and Monaghan.

It will be interesting to see how Moran fares in 2026 and beyond, with further changes also taking place a bit further down the age grades.

Opinion Split In Mayo Appointment Of Former Star As U20s Manager

The race to become Mayo U20 manager has also been a hotly contested one in recent weeks, with quite a few applicants for the position.

It was thought that the experienced duo of John Maughan and Pat Holmes were the big favourites, with former Mayo star David Brady having also applied.

However, it has now been confirmed that Keith Higgins will instead take up the role, which will be his first in inter-county management.

The Connaught Telegraph are reporting that the appointment has caused quite a bit of controversy in Mayo GAA circles, presumably due to Higgins' lack of experience.

It is suggested that the Ballyhaunis man will 'work closely' with former teammate Andy Moran after his appointment, something that was perhaps a factor in the decision.

Keith Higgins will be joined by fellow former Mayo players Kevin McLoughlin and David Drake on his management team, with Kilmeena's Mark Ryan also included.

It will no doubt be hoped that having a strong link between the U20 and senior manager will benefit Mayo over the coming seasons, with the county needing to blood some new talent in order to refresh the team.
