Pat Spillane Did Not Hold Back With Criticism Of Mayo After Kevin McStay Treatment

While the All-Ireland series will rumble on over the remainder of the month, attentions in Mayo have already turned to the 2026 season as they go in search of a new manager.

The county relieved previous boss Kevin McStay of his duties in the days after the county's championship exit. The manner in which they did so did not go down well in some quarters.

McStay has been suffering some health issues over the course of 2025, stepping away from the inter-county setup towards the end of their campaign. As a result, many feel that the cold way he was dispatched of did not reflect well on the authorities in Mayo.

Pat Spillane is someone who knows Kevin McStay well, with the pair having worked together as RTÉ pundits for quite a few years.

Writing in the Sunday World, the Kerry legend admitted that he was 'infuriated' over the way his former colleague was treated by Mayo.

Kevin McStay deserves a mention. The blatant lack of respect shown to him by the Mayo County Board statement infuriated me, I have to be honest.

I know Kevin. After working with him on The Sunday Game, I can vouch that he is a very honourable man, a guy who gave huge service to Mayo both as a player and manager.

A man who was, in my opinion, the most insightful Gaelic football analyst in the game. He didn’t deserve that blackguarding.

It remains to be seen which direction Mayo will opt to go in over the coming weeks, with a number of high profile figures having been linked with the manager position.

The likes of James Horan and Stephen Rochford have been suggested as internal contenders, while Tony McEntee and Oisín McConville are seen as options should they opt to go outside the county for their next appointment.
