Dermot McCabe has been appointed as the new Cavan senior football manager on a three-year term.

The appointment comes after he completed just one year of a two-year term in Westmeath. He became the obvious favourite for the Cavan post - which was vacated a few weeks ago by Raymond Galligan - after Finbar O'Reilly's withdrawal from the interview process left him the sole candidate in the race to manage his native county.

McCabe is a legendary figure in the Breffni County after starring in their 1997 Ulster SFC triumph and winning an All-Star in the same year. He also won six county SFC medals with Gowna in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002 and later managed them to two Oliver Plunkett Cups.

In addition he was part of Mickey Graham's backroom team when Cavan claimed the Anglo Celt Cup in 2020, while his short stint in charge of Westmeath yielded some excellent performances in Division 2 of the Allianz League, but not the results as the Lake County suffered relegation after a number of unlucky defeats.

Westmeath GAA are to due to convene this evening to begin the process of finding McCabe's successor.
