Mayo WhatsApp Rumours Shut Down As Hunt For New Manager Goes On

Mayo WhatsApp Rumours Shut Down As Hunt For New Manager Goes On

There has been another twist in the hunt for a new Mayo manager, as WhatsApp rumours swirling around the county have been shut down.

Kevin McStay and his management team were removed from their roles after a 2025 championship that saw the county fail to reach the knockout phase of the All-Ireland football championship.

With Mayo at a turning point, the call on who should replace McStay is a pivotal one, and not one that the county board are taking lightly.

The likes of Austin O'Malley, Ray Dempsey, and even James Horan were mentioned as potential options for Mayo but, in recent weeks, two clear leading contenders have emerged.

It seems almost certain that Andy Moran or Tony McEntee will be the Mayo manager in 2026.

However, rumours swirling around Mayo that Moran had landed the job have been resolutely shut down by a local newspaper this week.

The Connacht Telegraph reported on Wednesday on WhatsApp rumours circulating among the Mayo GAA scene.

The message in question suggested that Tony McEntee had been unsuccessful in the interview phase with the Mayo county board, and that Andy Moran was now expected to be named as the new manager. This message has been described as "unfounded."

Furthermore, the Telegraph confirmed with the county board that interviews will not take place until next week at the earliest.

The same publication named McEntee as the favourite to land the job earlier this week while effectively confirming it was a two-horse race between him and Moran.

McEntee recently departed as Sligo manager after five seasons, a period which saw them get to the closing stages of the Tailteann Cup on several occasions.

An All-Ireland winner as a player with Armagh and as manager with Crossmaglen, McEntee would bring significant pedigree to the Mayo job.

However, county legend Andy Moran is also a major player in the race for the job.

Moran has been tipped as the right man for the job by ex-teammates, having retired as a player only six years ago. After retirement, he worked with underage teams in Mayo before moving into management. He managed Leitrim for three seasons before joining Gabriel Bannigan's backroom team in Monaghan.

It seems as though a resolution to the Mayo managerial race is somewhat imminent, but reports that it has been concluded already appear to be greatly exaggerated.
