Mayo denied in Connacht final by 2-point rule loophole

Mayo denied in Connacht final by 2-point rule loophole

Galway won a fourth Connacht SFC title in a row this evening, beating Mayo by 1-17 to 1-15 in a classic in Castlebar.

The Tribesmen were up by as much as eight points in the first half, playing with a strong win at their backs, but Mayo pulled it back level at 1-13 to 1-13, when Ryan O’Donoghue knocked over long-range free.

However, it initially looked like the Mayo man would be awarded two points for his effort, but his shot was touched on the way over by ‘keeper by Connor Gleeson, meaning that it was just one pointer.

On second viewing, it also looked like the ball had already gone over before it was touched.

With the game in the 53rd minute, it would have given Mayo serious drive to finally take the lead back from their rivals, and you would have bet on them to see the game out.
