Cathal Coughlan was the Old Leighlin hero after his last-gasp point handed them a dramatic 1-11 to 0-13 victory over Rathvilly in the Carlow SFC final at Netwatch Cullen Park.

The final whistle was greeted with a mixture of delight and relief by the new champions who almost threw it away after leading by six points with 10 minutes to go. Points from Adam Burgress, Daire Byrne (two), Dara Curran (two) and Kevin Murphy (free) brought Rathvilly level, only for Coughlan to win it at the death for Old Leighlin.

There was nothing in it in the first half, at the end of which the sides were level on 0-6 apiece. Old Leighlin took control after Mikey Bambrick set up James Dowling for the only goal, but they were made to sweat by a battling Rathvilly side before they could eventually celebrate a first Carlow SFC title win in 12 years.
