College basketball transfer rankings 2025: Why Ole Miss' high-risk gamble on AJ Storr can pay off
Chris Beard got his first head coaching gig at Fort Scott Community College in small-town Kansas where Junior College rosters flip-flop like fish. So renovating an Ole Miss roster that lost six of its top seven players to graduation is no new task, and Beard is clearly unafraid to take big swings after making the Sweet 16 and leveraging Texas' interest into even more resources. Ole Miss landed the well-traveled AJ Storr Tuesday who showed flashes of utter dominance at Wisconsin in 2023-24 but couldn't extricate himself from Kansas' bench this past season.
It's a bounceback opportunity for Storr who provides a much-needed talent influx for an Ole Miss program that sorely needed firepower. Believe it or not, Storr is one of the most accomplished wings in the SEC at this current snapshot. But the former second-team, All-Big Ten selection has plenty of narratives to bust.
Scheme-wise, Ole Miss should be good for Storr. The Rebels had one of the higher transition rates in college basketball last season. That's money in the bank for Storr who is a menace in the open floor. Ole Miss also leaned heavily on isolation and post-ups, trusting the studs to win one-on-one matchups. That's how Wisconsin helped Storr post a career-best season. Ole Miss should have a plan in place to copy that blueprint.
Beard could be good for Storr, too. Storr has outrageous physical tools but his attention to detail defensively has wavered at every stop. That won't cut it for Beard.
