There are few more tortured existences in the world of sport than that of a Mayo supporter.

They enter each season with the optimism that this could finally be the year that the county conquers the unclimbable mountain, claiming a first All-Ireland title since 1951. Inevitably, that only leads to more heartbreak further down the line.

Last weekend provided a prime example of what it means to be a Mayo fan.

Most onlookers gave them little chance of securing a result against Donegal, with at least a draw needed if they were to remain in the All-Ireland series. The first half of the game did little to dispel such notions, with Stephen Rochford's men thoroughly outplayed at Dr Hyde Park.

Of course, as is Mayo's wont, they would produce a brilliant second half performance to ensure that the game would go down to the death.

Devastation ensued.

Local Commentary Perfectly Captured Emotions Of Mayo's Donegal Loss

Mayo fans were understandably distraught on the back of this latest heartbreak, with their feelings perfectly captured on Midwest Radio.

Michael D McAndrew and Martin Carney on commentary would give an example of the wild swing in emotions felt by the county's supporters on Sunday afternoon.

Remarkable stuff.

This season was a remarkably mixed one for Mayo, going from a National League final to failing to make the knockout rounds in the All-Ireland series. They would also lose a Connacht final to old rivals Galway along the way.

Of course, by the time next year rolls around, their supporters will no doubt rediscover that optimism they are so well known for. They will just hope that next time around, it is not shattered in such a devastating manner.
