Historical success from Zeynep Sönmez: She advanced to the 3rd round at Wimbledon

National athlete Zeynep Sönmez made history by advancing to the third round at the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament by defeating her Chinese opponent Xinyu Wang 2-0.

In the third grand slam event of the season held in London, the capital of England, Zeynep, who is ranked 88th in the world rankings, faced Wang, who is ranked 32nd, in the second round.

The 23-year-old national athlete, who started the match by breaking serve, lost the second game she served. Zeynep, who fell behind 4-1 by giving her opponent 4 games in a row, then won 3 games in a row to make the set 4-4. The national tennis player, who broke serve once more in the 11th game, made no mistake with her own serve and won the set 7-5, taking a 1-0 lead.

In the second set, the tennis players could not break the tie in the first 10 games, where they each broke serve once: 5-5. Zeynep Sönmez managed to take the lead 6-5 by making good use of the break point she gained in the 11th game. Zeynep won the set 7-5 by winning the 12th game, and left the court with a 2-0 victory, advancing to the 3rd round.

Zeynep Sönmez will face the winner of the match between world number 69, Dutch Suzan Lamens, and world number 17, Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in the third round.

Zeynep Sönmez became the first Turkish tennis player to advance to the third round of the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament.

Zeynep also became the first national athlete to reach the third round in singles at a Grand Slam event in 75 years. Previously, Bahtiye Musluoğlu had reached the third round at the French Open in 1950.
