Court says 'stop' to Trump's visa restriction decision

Court says 'stop' to Trump's visa restriction decision

US President Donald Trump has imposed restrictions on visas for foreign students who want to study at Harvard University or participate in exchange programs through an executive order.

Trump's executive order targeting Harvard University has been challenged. Boston District Judge Allison Burroughs has issued her ruling.

Burroughs, who announced that he had temporarily suspended the decree that would impose restrictions on visas for foreign students who wanted to study at Harvard University or participate in exchange programs, stated that the university would suffer "immediate and irreparable harm" during the trial.

Burroughs also noted that the administration has extended a temporary stay it previously imposed on Harvard’s attempt to end international student enrollment.

Harvard administration immediately took to court the executive order signed on June 5, which suspended the entry into the United States of new international students who were accepted to the university but were not immigrants under F, M or J visa types.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The federal government has threatened to freeze federal funding for several universities, including Harvard, citing campus protests in support of Palestine and diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

During this process, the "Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism" was established in partnership with the Department of Justice, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Education, and the General Services Administration (GSA).

The Trump administration decided to freeze $2.2 billion in funding and $60 million in contract fees for Harvard, and the university filed a lawsuit to block the decision, arguing that the federal government's freeze on funding was unlawful.

US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem sent a letter to Harvard University announcing that the school has suspended admissions of international students.

On the other hand, Boston District Judge Burroughs temporarily stayed the decision that the Department of Homeland Security had sent to Harvard.
