Works by Pedro Costa and André Príncipe exhibited in Tokyo

The Akio Nagasawa Ginza photography gallery in Tokyo opens the exhibition Casa de Lava/Mar Interior to the public this Friday, featuring works by director Pedro Costa and photographer André Príncipe.

According to information released by the Portuguese artists, in the exhibition Pedro Costa presents “22 images — collages — created during the preparation of the film Casa de Lava ”, which combine “photographs of the author, from filming, with paintings, newspaper clippings, other photographs, letters and excerpts of dialogues”.

Some of the 22 works now presented in Tokyo were shown at the Encontros de Arles 2024 photography festival in France, others “are having their first public presentation here”.

André Príncipe will exhibit a set of 15 photographs at the Japanese gallery, including previously unpublished images and others, which include “portraits of people, animals and landscapes in states of turbulence.”

"As is typical of this artist's work, the photographs are deeply anchored in a recognizable historical reality and seek to 'order the secrets of the visible world,'" the statement reads.

"Casa de Lava/Mar Interior" will be on display until September 6. On August 30, the two Portuguese artists will be at the gallery for a talk and book signing.

Pedro Costa and André Príncipe “share a close working relationship,” with some of Pedro Costa’s books, including “Casa de Lava — Caderno,” having been published by the publisher Pierre von Kleist, founded and directed by André Príncipe.

This month, an exhibition dedicated to the work of director Pedro Costa over the past 25 years, including films, installations and photographs, also opens in Tokyo at the Tokyo Museum of Photographic Art.

The Innervisions exhibition, which will be on display from August 28 to December 7, includes works “related to the characters, places and environments that have played a vital role in Costa’s work,” as well as works from the collection of the Tokyo Museum of Photographic Art, according to information available on themuseum’s website .

While Innervisions is on display, the museum's cinema will screen films selected by Pedro Costa, as well as a retrospective of the director's works.

Furthermore, “in anticipation of the opening of the exhibition, some cinemas in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Kyoto premiered the newly restored versions of The Blood , House of Lava and Bones .”
