Portugal to face Denmark, North Macedonia and Romania in Euro2026 handball tournament

Portugal to face Denmark, North Macedonia and Romania in Euro2026 handball tournament

The Portuguese handball team will face hosts Denmark, North Macedonia and Romania in Group B of the European Handball Championship, which will be played in Herning, according to the draw held today.

The final phase of the 17th edition of the European Handball Championship will be played in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, between January 15 and February 1, 2026.

Portugal is part of one of the two groups that will be played in Denmark, the European champions in 2008 and 2012, in their ninth appearance in the final stages, the fourth in a row, with their best result being the sixth place achieved in 2020.

The team led by Paulo Jorge Pereira, fourth in the 2025 World Cup, secured its ninth final phase, after its presences in 1994, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2020, 2022 and 2024, thanks to its first place in qualifying Group 8, together with its now-again opponent Romania, which arrived at the competition as the best third-placed team in the eight groups.

In addition to Denmark, four-time world champion and Portugal's 'executioner' in the semi-finals of the last World Cup, and Romania, which is competing in the final phase for the fourth time, with a best result of ninth place in 1996, the Portuguese team will also face North Macedonia, fifth in 2012, in the best of the nine previous appearances.

Four-time champions and holders of the trophy, France, will compete in Group C in Oslo, along with Norway, the Czech Republic and Ukraine, while Germany and Spain, who have already won two titles each, will face off in Group A, also in Herning, Denmark.

The other host, Sweden, which holds the record for victories with five, will host Croatia, the Netherlands and Georgia in Group E in Malmö.

Russia, banned from international competitions due to the war with Ukraine, is the only champion absent from this final phase, which does not have any newcomers, with the most recent participants being Georgia and the Faroe Islands, who are making their second consecutive appearance, while Italy returns to the final phase, after its unprecedented presence in 1998.
