Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa congratulates cyclist João Almeida on his victory in Switzerland

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, today congratulated the Portuguese cyclist João Almeida for his “brilliant triumph” on Sunday in the Tour of Switzerland, in a note published on the official website of the Presidency.

“It is with great satisfaction that President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa congratulates cyclist João Almeida on his brilliant triumph in the Tour of Switzerland. This victory, which joins those achieved this year in the Tour of Romandie and the Tour of the Basque Country, allows him to achieve a feat that only very few can achieve”, said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

In the same note, the Head of State highlighted “the exciting victory in the final time trial”, in which João Almeida “demonstrated his high competitive level, a source of pride for all Portuguese people and for national sport”.

Portuguese cyclist João Almeida (UAE Emirates) won the Tour of Switzerland on Sunday, triumphing in the eighth and final stage contested in a time trial, in which he closed the gap of 33 seconds to the then leader, Frenchman Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa-B&B Hotels).

João Almeida, who came second in 2024, adds the Tour de Suisse to his triumphs in the Tour de Romandie and the Basque Country and joins a select group of cyclists who have achieved three victories in the same season in one-week World Tour races.
