Liverpool pay tribute to Diogo Jota in friendly against AC Milan

Liverpool today paid tribute to former Portuguese international footballer Diogo Jota, who died on July 3, aged 28, before and during the defeat in a preparation game for the 2025/26 season against AC Milan (4-2).

Before the match in Kowloon, Hong Kong, fans erected a red and white mosaic with the inscription 'DJ 20', referring to the former striker's initials and the shirt number he wore during his time with the English champions, between 2020 and 2025.

Scottish player Kenny Dalglish, a historic former Liverpool player and manager, went to the pitch to lay a wreath in memory of Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, who played for Penafiel in the Portuguese Second Division and died in the same car accident.

During the game, in which Italian side AC Milan won 4-2, with a goal and an assist from Portuguese international striker Rafael Leão, the 'Reds' players wore special shirts and black smoke in tribute to their former teammate.

Rafael Leão scored in the 10th minute and dedicated the goal to Diogo Jota, making a '20' with his hands and joining them together in a sign of mourning, and in the 20th minute, the fans present at the Kai Tak Sports Park Stadium joined in a standing ovation for the two late brothers.

Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva, 25, died in the early hours of July 3, in a traffic accident on the A52, in Cernadilla, Spain.

The Portuguese international had been playing for Liverpool for five seasons, winning an English League, an FA Cup and two League Cups, and also becoming champion of the English second division with Wolverhampton, in a career also marked by winning the Nations League with the Portuguese national team in 2019 and 2025.
