Corinthians, Vasco and Cruzeiro: how much each qualifier has already received in prize money in the Copa do Brasil

Corinthians, Vasco and Cruzeiro: how much each qualifier has already received in prize money in the Copa do Brasil

With the eight teams selected, the Copa do Brasil approaches its most decisive stage of the season. Seven clubs from the Brazilian Championship's Série A and only one from Série B remain in contention for the tournament, which is considered the "most democratic" nationally, encompassing clubs from all divisions. Beyond the quest for the trophy, the matches have taken on a multi-million dollar atmosphere in recent years, due to the prize money offered by the CBF for qualifying in each stage.

In total, 92 clubs compete in the Copa do Brasil, 12 of which enter from the third round onwards. These are the clubs that won the Série, Copa do Nordeste, Copa Verde, or qualified for the Libertadores this season. Of the clubs still in the Copa do Brasil, four have played since the first round and, consequently, have accumulated the largest prize pools so far.

In addition to the number of stages played, the Copa do Brasil has, until the third round, a division of the prize money into three groups:

  • Group 1 (Serie A clubs)
  • Group 2 (Serie B clubs)
  • Group 3 (clubs from Series C, D and without division)

For playing in the first round, for example, Fluminense , Vasco and Atlético-MG added R$1,543,500 to their coffers; Athletico-PR , which eliminated São Paulo this week and plays in the second division this season, received R$1,378,125.

Thus, the eight classified are divided into three subgroups in relation to the prize money accumulated so far:

  • Serie A teams that have been competing since the first phase (Atlético-MG, Fluminense and Vasco) - R$ 14,112,000
  • Series B teams that have been competing since the first phase (Athletico-PR) - R$ 13,615,875
  • Serie A teams that entered the third phase (Bahia, Botafogo, Corinthians and Cruzeiro) - R$ 10,694,250

The first group earned the largest amount, precisely because it played the most matches in the competition. From the third phase onward, when the remaining 12 teams enter the competition, the prize money is equal across all divisions. Retrô, which is in Série C and was eliminated by Bahia, would have received the same amount had it advanced to the quarterfinals, for example.

In total, the Copa do Brasil will distribute more than R$500 million in prize money this season, a 5.39% increase, according to the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA). If the champion is one of the three clubs in the first group, the prize money could reach R$101.2 million . The quarterfinal draw will take place next Tuesday, the 12th, starting at 10 am (Brasília time).
