All three Polish foil fencers who made it through Thursday's qualifying rounds were eliminated in the round of 32 of the individual competition at the World Fencing Championships in Tbilisi. Hanna Łyczbińska finished highest, in 38th place.

However, in the first round she lost to last year's Asian champion, Korean Sena Hong, 11:15.

Her clubmate from KU AZS UAM Poznań, Karolina Żurawska, faced the experienced Italian Martina Batini, the 2014 world vice-champion and three-time European Championship medalist, and lost 12:15.

In turn, Martyna Jelińska (AZS AWF Poznań) lost 12:15 to American Lauren Scruggs, ninth in the foil classification and Olympic vice-champion from Paris.

Łyczbińska took 38th place in the final classification, while Żurawska and Jelińska were tied for 56th place. Aleksandra Jeglińska (AZS AWF Warszawa) finished 74th, losing to... Żurawska in the decisive round of qualifying.

On Friday, the sabre fencers will also compete for medals, while the foil and epee fencers will begin the team competition, with the top eight teams to be determined. The Polish team is defending the title they won two years ago in Milan.
