Jagiellonia's nightmare in the 97th minute. And then a sudden turnaround. What a finish!
After Legia Warsaw's 1-2 defeat to Celje , and Raków Częstochowa's winless performance in Prague , Polish fans were hoping to finally see their representative win in the third round of the Conference League. Jagiellonia Białystok theoretically had the best chance.
After all, Adrian Siemienic's men started their European campaign with a 1-0 victory over Hamrum, and then a surprise 1-1 defeat of Strasbourg. The match against Shkendija seemed to be an easier task for them.
It was important to remember, however, that Jagiellonia had been struggling recently. In the PKO BP Ekstraklasa, they first lost to Górnik Zabrze (1-2) in controversial circumstances , and then also disappointed in the match against Raków Częstochowa (1-2), giving Coach Siemieniec something to think about. So, for the match in North Macedonia, he made changes and surprised the fans by... this time, only Jesus Imaz was among the substitutes!
The match started off quite tense, with both teams making a lot of mistakes. However, there was no shortage of commitment and attempts to create scoring opportunities. In the 17th minute, the previous season's top scorer, Afimico Pululu, shone. Despite receiving assists from several opponents, he held onto the ball and crossed it across the goal, but there was no one to finish his pass.
And the opposition responded moments later. Two quick passes were enough to give Fabrice Tamba a fantastic opportunity. The Senegalese could have, and should have, beaten Miłosz Piekutowski, but his shot flew just wide of the post.
Later, however, the game became more intense, with the players having problems with the poorly prepared pitch, and Leon Flach had the best chance for the visitors before the break. The midfielder was about to shoot from inside the penalty area, but at the last minute the opposing defenders made a sacrificial save and there were no goals in the first half.
What happened there?! What a terrible start for Jagiellonia Białystok!Things weren't going quite right for Jagiellonia Białystok, and after the break, the Pride of Podlasie was in serious trouble! Moments after the restart, Ronaldo Webster delivered a well-placed corner kick, which was met by Liridon Latifi, surprising the visitors and giving Shkendija a 1-0 lead!
Adrian Siemieniec was forced to react and, moments later, made a triple substitution. Alex Pozo, Sergio Lozano, and Jesus Imaz appeared on the pitch. This was supposed to transform Jagiellonia's game, but it was hardly a sudden burst of momentum for the visitors. We saw more individual attempts from Pululu, and the attacking side still lacked a significant initiative. And the visitors weren't even able to deliver crosses from set pieces.
So the Jagiellonia coach continued, sending off Bartosz Mazurek and Aziel Jackson this time. Even with the entire midfield and wing substitutions, there was no turning point for the visitors. They struggled to find a response to their opponents' goal for almost the entire second half, and if that wasn't enough, they were forced to play shorthanded in stoppage time, when Jesus Imaz received a second yellow card, this time for simulation.
So what did Jagiellonia do, playing ten men, after such a poor performance? In the final action, they secured a point thanks to a wonderful shot by Segio Lozano! It's incredible what Adrian Siemieniec's players did in North Macedonia!
Now, Jagiellonia faces new challenges. Adrian Siemieniec's players will soon play against Pogoń Szczecin (November 9), GKS Katowice (November 23), KuPS (November 27), and Zagłębie Lubin (November 30).
