Iga Świątek's huge risk. The Polish player has just made a decision regarding Roland Garros

Iga Świątek's huge risk. The Polish player has just made a decision regarding Roland Garros

This is not an easy time for the best Polish tennis player. Iga Świątek was supposed to turn the tables on the best Polish tennis player, breaking through on the clay courts. However, that did not happen. The Polish player first lost in the semifinals in Madrid to Coco Gauff, and then in Rome – already in the third round – to Danielle Collins. In both cases, we are talking about WTA 1000 events. Such results meant that the Polish player will fall outside the top three of the ranking .

Iga Świątek made a decision before Roland Garros. Is it a surprise?

In the case of activities related to improving the game or proper preparation for a specific event in the calendar, there are two schools of thought. One of them says that a player will best regain self-confidence or improve their game when… they play, i.e. take part in competition, instead of “just” training.

This was the path that Polish sportswoman Marion Bartoli predicted after the sensational defeat in Rome.

- It will be a difficult situation. Will Świątek ask for a wild card in one of the events preceding Roland Garros? That is a big question mark. For example, Novak Djokovic asked for a "wild card" in Geneva. I think Iga lacks match play. I have the impression that she will probably sit down with her team and wonder whether they will choose 10 days of training in Paris on the courts of Roland Garros, where she will have a title to defend, or will she actually go to the tournament? I think she will choose the latter option - the 2013 Wimbledon champion assessed in "The Tennis Gazette".

What is Świątek's decision? There will be no changes. The organizers of the WTA 500 tournaments in Strasbourg or the WTA 250 in Rabat can only sigh. Świątek will not come to their tournaments. The Pole now needs, at least according to her team, rest and good training before Roland Garros 2025 begins.

– The plans haven't changed and the next tournament is Paris. Now it's time to regenerate, then return to training before the tournament – Daria Sulgostowska, the PR manager of the Świątek team, told Sport.pl.

Let us recall that the tournament in Paris will start on May 25. The Polish woman therefore has a little over a week to prepare properly to defend the title of "Queen of Paris".

Świątek has won five Grand Slam titles, four times at Roland Garros (2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024) and once at the US Open (2022).
