Team boss Stella sees McLaren's biggest gain in 'tyre magic'

McLaren is making great strides in the way it combats tire wear and overheating. Team boss Andrea Stella said this after the Miami Grand Prix, in which drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris were in a class of their own. "I expected that we would benefit from our tire management, but not that the difference would be so big. That surprised me," Stella said on the Formula 1 website.
Piastri won the race, with Norris second, four seconds behind. Third-placed George Russell (Mercedes) was already 37 seconds behind, while Max Verstappen (Red Bull) finished fourth, almost forty seconds behind. "Tyre management in Formula 1 is still a bit of magic," Stella said. "I think that in hot conditions our car works very well because of the cooling system. We have excellent technology in that and it has reached a point where we can make such a huge difference," Stella said.
