The Treasury also 'wins' with Alcaraz's victory in Paris: this is the money the Tax Agency will receive.

Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner this past Sunday in the final of Roland Garros , a tournament the Spanish tennis player has won for the second consecutive year. The French Grand Slam is one of the ATP events that pays out the most in prize money, and the Murcian has taken home a substantial sum for his victory... just like the Tax Agency .

The French Open allocated more than €56 million in prize money for its 2025 edition. Thanks to his victory in the final, Alcaraz was the tennis player who pocketed the largest share of the pie, with €2.5 million .

"When we talk about these amounts for sporting victories, it's common to think only of the gross amount, but what's truly relevant is how much ends up in the athlete's pocket ," explains Aitor Fernández, a tax expert at TaxDown, an online platform for help with income tax returns.

"In Spain, the combination of state and regional income tax can mean that more than 45% of the money ends up in the hands of the Treasury . Therefore, good tax planning is key, even for the best athletes in the world," says Fernández.

Since the El Palmar tennis player is a tax resident in Spain, this country will be able to collect, through specific taxation in the state and regional personal income tax , a portion of its funding through the professional successes of its athletes.

According to estimates from the aforementioned website, Alcaraz will have to pay taxes on 46% of his Roland Garros earnings, or approximately €1,181,900, which will go to the public treasury .
