Keylor Navas promises unity, leadership, and titles in his presentation with Pumas

Keylor Navas promises unity, leadership, and titles in his presentation with Pumas

With the humility of a veteran and the enthusiasm of a rookie, Keylor Navas was introduced this Thursday as the new goalkeeper for the Pumas de la UNAM , a team he joins with his sights set on titles and the clear intention of becoming a benchmark on and off the field.

The Costa Rican goalkeeper asserted that his signing wasn't just about sporting reasons, but also an emotional appeal.

"When you have hope, you're closer to achieving your goals. I hope we can make history. With the fans, with the club, all together... we'll achieve it," he said during the press conference.

Before deciding on Pumas , Navas consulted with two key figures: Sergio Ramos , former teammate at Real Madrid , and Miguel Herrera , current coach of the Costa Rica National Team .

Both agreed that this was a significant challenge and a great opportunity to lead one of the most representative clubs in Mexican soccer.

"He (Herrera) told me that I was joining a big club, that people would demand a lot from you, and that's the beauty of football," Navas said of the advice he received from "Piojo." For his part, Ramos spoke highly of the growth of Liga MX and what his experience in Mexico meant to him.

At 38 years old and with a successful career, Navas presented himself with a message of unity for the locker room.

"I'm here to contribute, not to divide. I'm here to contribute what I've learned throughout my career," he said, making it clear that, beyond the name, his intention is to work as a team and guide the younger generation.

In that sense, he also showed support for goalkeeper Rodrigo Parra , a starter in the first few days of the tournament.

"I'm going to be there to help him. We all make mistakes, and the important thing is knowing how to get back up. He'll pull through," she assured.

The choice of Pumas also had personal reasons. Navas rejected offers from Saudi Arabia and other destinations to be closer to his family and better prepare for the 2026 World Cup . He acknowledged that the emotional stability and competitive environment of Liga MX were decisive.

Although the team sits at the bottom of the table, Navas is confident they can turn things around.

"We can have good players, but if we're not a team, we won't achieve anything. Here, we all have to pull together," he said with conviction.

His debut could come this Friday on Matchday 3 of the 2025 Apertura against Querétaro , provided the coaching staff deems him ready.

The truth is that the Costa Rican goalkeeper's presence has generated enthusiasm among the auriazul fans, who see him as a figure capable of changing the team's course.
