Canet de Mar dedicates its athletics tracks to Olympic champion Jordi Llopart

Canet de Mar (Maresme) experienced an emotional day on Sunday with the celebration of the II Jordi Llopart Great Athletics Walk and the inauguration of the commemorative plaque that gives its name to the Athletics Tracks of the municipality. The event, which took place after the presentation of medals to the participants of the competition, was attended by municipal authorities, representatives of the world of athletics and relatives of the athlete.

The mayor of Canet de Mar, Pere Xirau, highlighted the importance of this tribute, since Jordi Llopart, in addition to being the first Spanish athlete to win an Olympic medal in athletics at the Moscow 1980 Games, had a close connection with the municipality. “We not only recognise his sporting career, but also his presence and involvement with the town. For us it is an honour that the athletics tracks bear his name,” he said.

For his part, Antonio Hernández Luna, president of the Club Atletisme Canet de Mar, thanked the City Council for its support in the initiative, as well as in the organisation of this second edition of the Great Athletics Walk. He also highly valued the fact that the Ronda Doctor Inglés has become a reference circuit for athletic walking.

Jordi Llopart's family expressed their deep gratitude for this recognition and praised the athlete's work in promoting race walking and the values ​​of sport. "It is a source of pride to see how his legacy is kept alive and how the principles he so defended continue to be transmitted: effort, perseverance and passion for athletics" explained one of his relatives.

The event ended with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque that officially names the Canet de Mar athletics tracks, a gesture that symbolises the recognition of Jordi Llopart's career and legacy. The Town Hall assures that it will continue to work to promote this competition and consolidate it as a benchmark sporting event in the municipality.
