Waterford legend & selector criticises Munster SHC schedule

Waterford legend & selector criticises Munster SHC schedule

An already wide-open Munster SHC is even wider following Waterford’s defeat of Clare on Sunday.

The result leaves Waterford second, with one win from one after a bye week in the first round, while Clare are in a perilous position after a draw and a loss, with next week’s game against Tipperary looking like an All-Ireland knockout clash.

Déise will be back on the pitch this weekend, facing Limerick on Saturday evening, with just a six-day turnaround from their win over the Banner.

Four-time Munster SHC winner, Dan Shanahan, has spoken out against the short turnaround, and feels that it is too tough for amateurs in such an intense sport to expect to be at their best without proper rest and recovery.

The Waterford legend, and now a selector with the team, said: “They’re already inside having a sandwich and getting recovery and stuff like that, which is very, very vital. Six-day turnaround. Jesus boys, that takes some going. For an amateur sport, that’s fair intense.

“I think the players should actually do every second week. If you want me to be honest with you, we need to recover. Playing week-in and week-out is not fair, it’s not fair.

“Every second week would give everyone a better chance of seeing proper hurling. But look, what an occasion next Saturday evening with Limerick coming to Walsh Park.”
