It was a performance that provided a timely reminder of his class, even for those inside The Kingdom.

Ó Sé Made Very Un-Kerry Like Admission When Discussing David Clifford

David Clifford has been deemed by many as the greatest player we have ever seen in Gaelic football for a few years now, although the nature of supporters in Kerry meant that they have often been hesitant to lavish such praise on the 26-year old.

Speaking on The Sunday Game, Tomás Ó Sé finally let that Kerry mask slip somewhat when summing up why Clifford was probably the greatest player ever produced within the county.

'Immense', 'revved up' and maybe just 'the greatest who has come out of Kerry', it's the talismanic David Clifford #SundayGame pic.twitter.com/xPGeIZ45xN

Everybody in Kerry hates discussions about 'who is the greatest' or 'who is the best'. You have the likes of Mikey Sheehy, the likes of Gooch, the likes of Matt Connor, the likes of Peter Canavan.

I think [Clifford] has done stuff that has elevated him. In my opinion, I think he is the greatest to come out of Kerry.

I just think the way he carries himself, the way he leads, what he does off the ball, what he does off the field. He's old style, he's grounded, his family make sure he's grounded.

It's what he does on the field, the consistency he brings. A poor season for David Clifford is a top season for other players. He is gifted.

No matter what way you want to throw it at him, he will take abuse, do whatever. He has the silken skills, but he as a tough edge to him as well.

Everybody outside of Kerry says 'why don't you build him up, he's the greatest footballer ever'. They don't like to build him up too much in Kerry because we need him for the next game, you know?

GAA people in Kerry are certainly experts at tempering expectations when it comes to their players, but that particular horse bolted a long time ago when it comes to David Clifford.

The forward will no doubt have a huge impact in the All-Ireland final against Donegal later this month, where he will be hoping to land the second Celtic cross of his inter-county career. Should he do so, you get the sense that a third Footballer of the Year gong won't be far behind.
