Dina Asher-Smith's net worth, split from Team GB star boyfriend, tearful BBC interview

Dina Asher-Smith will hope to bring home the gold as she prepares to compete at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this weekend. The Team GB star became the first female British sprinter to win a world title when she claimed the 200m gold in 2019 and will be aiming to add to her collection.

The 29-year-old secured an Olympic silver medal as part of the women’s 4x100m relay at last year’s Paris Games, improving on her bronze medals in the same event at the previous two Olympics. However, Asher-Smith missed out on an individual medal, finishing fourth in the 200m final and reaching the 100m semi-finals.

There has been plenty of success throughout Asher-Smith’s career, though, with the sprinter claiming six golds at European Championships. This year, she won the 200m British title for the third time in August, running a championship record time of 22.14 seconds. The star sprinter’s net worth is estimated to be between £2.5million and £3.5m, according to 888 Sport. Asher-Smith’s wealth has previously been claimed to be as high as £5m, while others have suggested that the athlete’s net worth is nearer the £1m mark.

Asher-Smith will earn much of her income through lucrative sponsorship and endorsement deals. Her partnerships include Nike and luxury watchmaker Hublot.

The Olympic medalist is also a brand ambassador for PureGym. In addition, she has done various media work and modelled for Nike, Louis Vuitton and other top brands at fashion events.

Asher-Smith has largely kept her relationships private, but she previously dated fellow Team GB sprinter Zharnel Hughes. He also claimed a silver medal at the Paris Games in the men’s 4x100m relay.

In 2018, it was revealed that the sporting couple had separated ahead of the Commonwealth Games. While there were concerns that the split could impact the pair’s preparations, Asher-Smith insisted she remained on good terms with Hughes and was left baffled by the interest in her love life.

“I didn’t think it was that much of a big deal to be in the papers," she said. "We are fine, we are friends. I won’t go into the details because that is personal life but we are cool.

"We train [at] the same time, we are still pretty cool. It is absolutely fine. I am not a celebrity which is why it is hilarious that people care if I have a boyfriend."

Asher-Smith will be keen to win a second world title and her passion for the sport was clear at the Paris Olympics. She was part of an emotional moment during a BBC interview as she reflected on missing out on the 100m final, even after running her 200m heat the day after.

"I’m just angry from yesterday. That's all I can say,” Asher-Smith said. “I was angry [about the 100m], but coming down the home straight, I was like, 'Relax, relax.' But I am very upset."

As she started to fight back tears, Asher-Smith looked away from the camera before slightly raising her hand to gesture to cut the interview short. She had finished fifth in her 100m semi-final and her feelings had been immediately apparent after the race.

"I feel like I am in a great place, great shape, I am very, very disappointed. It’s frustrating, full stop,” she admitted. “Whether it’s a mind-blowing [winning] time or it’s not. I fully know that I am capable and fully know that I should have been able to produce. I am shocked and disappointed.

“I have been running great, I have been running great races, I have been running great in training. I was fully prepared to make that final so I am very disappointed.”
