World Fencing Championships: French foil fencers lose in the final and take the silver medal

Despite never having been able to compete with the Americans, the French foil fencers won a fine silver medal in Tbilisi. It was the fifth medal for the French team at these World Championships.

The French women's foil team failed to achieve the feat on Monday against the United States (45-24) and will have to settle for silver at the World Fencing Championships in Tbilisi , Georgia. Les Bleues, already second in Milan in 2023, were almost non-existent against the Americans, who won gold at the Paris Games and were led by Olympic and world champion Lee Kiefer.

The latter took the lead from the start, never to relinquish the lead, and above all, they gradually opened up a considerable gap, which became too difficult to catch for Eva Lacheray, Anita Blaze, Morgane Patru and Pauline Ranvier. The latter had been beaten by Kiefer in the final of the individual event. She can nevertheless return from these World Championships satisfied, with two medals.

The silver medal for the foil fencers adds to the gold medal won by the French épée fencers on Saturday. France now has five medals, including the silver medals of Pauline Ranvier and Jean-Philippe Patrice (sabre), and the bronze medal of Maxime Pauty (foil).

Disappointment, however, came on Monday for the sabre fencers, led by brothers Sébastien and Jean-Philippe Patrice, who were stopped in the quarterfinals. The men's team sabre final was won by Italy. Tuesday and Wednesday will now give way to the final team events, with the women's sabre and men's épée on the program.
