Var's Lenny Martinez wins the final stage of the Dauphiné at the Mont Cenis plateau

Var's Lenny Martinez wins the final stage of the Dauphiné at the Mont Cenis plateau

That makes three. Three World Tour successes for Var's Lenny Martinez, at just 21 years old.

After stage victories this year in Paris-Nice and the Tour de Romandie, the climber from Montauroux won this Sunday, solo on the Mont Cenis plateau, during the 8th and final stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné.

Part of a breakaway that included some big names (Mas, Kuus, Healy), the former Groupama-FDJ rider managed to catch Enric Mas's wheel, then drop him, but above all, he resisted the comeback of the duo Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar, who had set out in pursuit. Martinez finished 34 seconds ahead of the Dane.

"Yesterday (Saturday) I was completely unwell, the other days before weren't great either, I wasn't expecting much, but I started the stage and I felt better. I tried to get into the breakaway, but it was only at the end that I thought it was possible to win. The end? I thought I was going to be caught by them (Pogacar and Vingegaard), but I told myself that it would be a real shame to be caught just before the finish line, I rode flat out and it worked. I came for the general classification, but I'm saving the week with this victory. My next race will be the Tour, I won't be there for the general classification, but I'll try to win a stage."
