A tragedy that spoils the party. A spectator fell to his death at the Allianz Arena in Munich during Portugal 's Nations League final against Spain, police reported on Sunday night.
The fan tumbled from one floor of the stadium, falling some 8 meters before landing in the press box shortly after 11 p.m. during the first half of extra time. Neither the players nor the referees noticed the scene in the upper reaches of the stadium, which was opened in 2005 and is home to Bayern Munich.
Numerous rescue workers, officers, and police officers rushed to the area of the press box where the man had fallen. Horrified witnesses called in other rescue teams. A tarpaulin was installed to protect the area where medics were fighting to save the supporter's life.
Despite rapid intervention by emergency services to save his life, "he sadly died at 12:06 a.m. (Monday). Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time," a UEFA spokesperson said.
The circumstances of the fall are under investigation. Police said the victim was from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a town 90 km south of Munich. "At this time, there is no evidence to contradict the hypothesis of a tragic accident," the police explained. "Witness accounts are still being collected, and videos are being analyzed," they added.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez and Spain coach Luis de la Fuente offered their condolences to the victim's family, as did Portugal's Nuno Mendes, named best player in the final, all three of whom attended the post-match press conference, which Portugal won on penalties (2-2 aet, 5-3 pen).
