Stan Wawrinka has yet to win two in a row on the ATP Tour this year. On Wednesday evening, the Vaudois (ATP 156) was defeated by Bosnian Damir Dzumhur, world number 61 and seeded No. 4, in the round of 16 of the ATP 250 tournament in Umag (Croatia). The score: 6-4 7-5 in exactly 2 hours of play.

Wawrinka had his work cut out for him against an opponent who varied his spin and covered the court remarkably well. Against the superstitious Bosnian player (he kept the same ball as long as he won the point on his serve), Wawrinka held his own, but ultimately gave in late in the set, losing his serve at 4-4. Dzumhur finished immediately, taking the lead (6-4).

Broken on his first two service games in the second set, "Stan The Man" didn't give up. Heroically, the Vaudois player even came back to 5-5 after having erased three breaks, thanks in particular to two huge points won at the net. Dzumhur finally had the last word, taking advantage of another loss of serve by the Vaudois at the worst possible moment, concluding the match with a run to the net (7-5).

The Vaud native, who has only won two matches on the main circuit in 2025, will therefore have to wait a little longer before reaching his first quarter-final since reaching the ATP 250 tournament in Stockholm last October. As a reminder, the Vaud native, a finalist in 2023 on Croatian clay, won the first of his 16 ATP tournaments in Umag in 2006, where he defeated a very young Novak Djokovic.
