Breathless suspense and total spectacle. The Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series on Saturday, November 1st – the finals of the major North American baseball league (MLB) – by dominating the Toronto Blue Jays for the fourth time in seven games after an exceptional confrontation.

Last season's champions, the California franchise, and its Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani, became the first since the New York Yankees (between 1998 and 2000) to retain a title. And yet, they came close to defeat several times.

Down 3 games to 2, the Dodgers managed to win the last two games of the finals to prevent the only Canadian franchise in the North American league – which has 30 teams – from winning its third title. And on Saturday night, they overcame a 3-0 and 4-2 deficit, even tying the game at 4-4 in the ninth and final regular inning.

A dynasty

Two more innings were needed before Will Smith hit a home run to give Los Angeles a 5-4 lead. Playing at home, the Blue Jays had the final say at bat and a chance to win, but a two-player strikeout on a single play ruined their efforts.

No sooner had the fate of the final been sealed than fireworks began to resound and tear through the sky of Los Angeles and its surroundings, as is the tradition in the megalopolis.

Hailing from the other Los Angeles franchise (the Angels), Japanese star Shihei Ohtani, who didn't score on Saturday, earned his second title in two seasons with the Dodgers. His teammate Yoshinobu Yamamoto was named MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the Finals. The pitcher, who closed out Saturday's game, took the mound three times in seven games, a remarkable physical feat considering the demands of his unique role on a baseball team.

With this ninth title and the third in six seasons, the Los Angeles Dodgers are establishing their dynasty for the 2020s, and are only asking to achieve the triple in 2026.
