The Zacharian section of the Aubagne taekwondo club has 43 students, aged 3 to 14 , who train with Cyril Gonzalez , 4th dan black belt, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Maison du Peuple. Divided by age, they learn this Korean martial art in which priority is given to defense, with kicks above the belt, in the chest protector and the electronic helmet following the rules of the World Taekwondo Federation, an Olympic sport which is based on a points system.
While classes continue until the end of June, the season ended with a few champions. Lucas Bartholomey, a blue belt, won the gold medal at the friendly Fréjus and Nice Opens. Enzo Aubran and Théo Cherpin, blue belts with two red bars, won the bronze medal at the regional championship. Théo is also a finalist at the 2024 French Championships. Nolhan Freze, a blue belt with two red bars, finished third at the Bourg-lès-Valence Open.
Five fights, three victories
The most successful this year, however, is Laïna Cherif who, at only 11 years old, has just obtained the title of vice-champion of France in mini taekwondo , more than 51 kg. For her second year of practice and first year of combat, this young orange belt girl did not disgrace herself. "There was the weigh-in then back to the hotel. The next morning, we trained with the coach, then there were the fights, between each, we could play." All in humility, Laïna then explains having had 5 fights against 4 girls, three victories, her two defeats being against the same young lady, the now French champion. "It was so good! When it was over, I threw myself on sweets," she laughs.
Her coach and her mother, who believe in her, will have the mission next year of encouraging her to do the same, since for the next competitions, she will be old enough to land blows to the helmet, which causes her a little apprehension for the moment. Her enjoyment of the practice and strong from this victory, there is no doubt that she will be back next year: "She has the potential," assures her coach.
For anyone interested in joining the club, registration will be possible at the association forum. A trial class will also be offered. Registrations can be made at 06.13.18.79.91.
