Valdano reveals which team his grandchildren support: 'I have tried to corrupt them'

Jorge Valdano is one of the most authoritative voices when it comes to talking about football, especially for his style, his metaphors and his ability to link sport with literature. And when he speaks, he leaves behind concepts that transcend or memorable anecdotes.
This time Valdano was invited to the Letras Móviles event, which was held this Monday at the Instituto Cervantes in Madrid. The former footballer and coach chatted with Luis García Montero , who is a poet, essayist and Director of the Institute, about sport and literature.

Among the various topics discussed, Valdano referred to current football and the emerging Super League. "I hope that the fan will be the last to sell out. It already happened in England when the idea of the Super League appeared, it was the English fans who stopped it. The fan still feels like they own the game and have something to say," said the current football commentator.
The topic revolved around the identity of the teams, and that was an excuse for Valdano to tell an anecdote.

He confessed that his grandchildren were not Real Madrid fans: "My three grandchildren are Athletic fans. I have tried to corrupt them by all possible means with shirts signed by players, but they return them to me... They were born in Bilbao, their mother is from Bilbao and she campaigns every day at home. I, who appear once a week, don't have enough strength," he said to the laughter of those present.
Valdano is an Argentine speaker, former footballer and former football coach. World champion with Argentina at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, he played as a forward and his first team was Newell's Old Boys.
As a coach he developed his entire career in Spain, managing Club Deportivo Tenerife, Valencia CF, Real Madrid, Deportivo Alavés and Real Zaragoza. He currently works as a commentator.
