Emir of Qatar transfers World Cup organization to Donald Trump

La Jornada Newspaper, Thursday, May 15, 2025, p. a10

FIFA President Gianni Infantino accompanied US President Donald Trump on his tour of the Persian Gulf. In a ceremony, the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, host of the 2022 World Cup, symbolically transferred the organization of the next edition in 2026.

The sheikh presented the president with a golden ball signed by the three protagonists. It was an event attended by no representatives from Mexico or Canada , as reported by The New York Times .

Next year's World Cup will be held not only in the United States but also jointly with Mexico and Canada. The only guests at that ceremony were Trump, the Emir of Qatar, and Gianni Infantino.

The FIFA president's presence attracted attention for several reasons, especially because the 75th ordinary congress of the highest governing body of football begins today in Asunción, Paraguay.

FIFA has accepted invitations to attend a series of important events with world leaders, where the World Cups will also be discussed , the organization said in a statement.

During that tour of the Middle East, Infantino announced his goal of generating $1 billion in revenue by expanding the Women's World Cup from 32 to 48 teams in 2031, which will be held in the United States.

Like the men's tournament, which will go from 32 to 48 teams and from 64 to 104 matches starting in 2026, the women's Cup went from 24 to 32 teams in the 2023 edition and will expand to 48 starting in 2031.

The goal

The goal is to generate a billion dollars just from hosting the World Cup. Then, we'll reinvest in women's soccer , Infantino said.

The leader confirmed the venues for the next three Women's Cups: Brazil in 2027, the United States in 2031, and the United Kingdom four years later.

According to the agency, the 2023 World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, generated $570 million in revenue.

By comparison, FIFA earned $6.9 billion from the sale of television rights to the Qatar men's tournament alone, representing 80 percent of its total revenue from 2019-2022.

Considered the ultimate idol of Mexican wrestling, Místico acknowledges that it hasn't been easy to remain a favorite with the public, especially due to the multiple injuries he's suffered during his 20-year career. However, he maintains that the sacrifice has been well worth it .

In an interview with La Jornada , the nicknamed King of Silver and Gold , who made his national wrestling debut in June 2004, said that the hardest part of all this time has been overcoming injuries. I have a 10-centimeter plate in my left clavicle, nails in my left knee and foot, and I recently broke my elbow, which is why I was out for six weeks, but even though I'm at 80 percent, I keep doing what I love, which is wrestling, and when you enjoy what you do, there's nothing that can stop you .

Constancy and dedication

He stated that beyond considering injuries something negative, he takes them as true trophies, they are marks that my profession has left me, evidence of my time in this sport, they have helped me mark my name with gold letters in the book of Mexican wrestling .

Likewise, the gladiator, who currently works for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) and who yesterday attended the presentation of Project World, an initiative that seeks to raise awareness about identity theft, mentioned that the key to his success has been the perseverance and dedication he puts into every time he steps into the ring.

"I never received a name, an alias, like a son, a nephew, or a grandson. I started my character from scratch, and it's been a lot of work to maintain it. I'm a person who goes all out for the character; I live it intensely. The wrestler makes the mask, and in every performance I give it my all as if it were my debut. I continue to train and prepare myself to the fullest. It's wonderful to give my all in every performance to continue being one of the best exponents of this sport."

It's been a little over 20 years since I started, and if people still think about me, it's for a reason. I've always demonstrated my professionalism, and I'll continue to do so until my last fight.

The gladiator, originally from the rough neighborhood of Tepito, also noted that despite having a very extensive career, during which he has worked in various wrestling companies, such as WWE in the United States, and has even changed his name several times, he still has many goals to achieve.

“When you start in this sport, you have many dreams and a desire to excel, and even though more than two decades have passed and I've been in many companies and performed all over the world, I still have that same desire to succeed. I want to continue fulfilling more dreams. I assure you that there's still Místico around for a while.

People have always supported me even though I've sometimes changed my character, and I'm infinitely grateful for that. They never forget those of us who truly came from the bottom, who struggled. I'm a person who focuses on what I love and will always give my best. I want to continue leaving my mark and becoming a great legend , he asserted.

They clarify that Mexican taekwondo is not suspended.

Adriana Díaz Reyes

La Jornada Newspaper, Thursday, May 15, 2025, p. a11

The Mexican Taekwondo Federation (FMTCD) is not suspended. Although it was reported last Friday that the non-profit organization led by Raymundo González had received a sanction from World Taekwondo (WT), the international organization clarified that it was all a mistake .

We wish to clarify and formally confirm that the FMTKD is not suspended. Instead, the World Taekwondo Council approved the establishment of an interim body for the organization, in consultation and cooperation with the relevant local sports authorities. This measure was taken to address statutory and governance concerns related to the election process conducted last year , according to the document signed by Corbin Min, WT Deputy Secretary General.

After completing his second term as president of the FMTKD in March 2024, González called an assembly to re-elect himself to the organization, which he has led since 2016. Faced with criticism and challenges, the leader scheduled a new vote supported by the Sports Electoral Surveillance Council (Coved), in which he emerged victorious.

We sincerely regret the error in the original version of the statement and appreciate your understanding. Please be assured that the corrected version has already been published, and appropriate measures are being taken to prevent such errors in the future. If you have any questions or require further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact us , the document sent by the WT adds.

In response to doubts about the legality of the electoral process, González asserts that his re-election until 2028 was carried out in accordance with the association's bylaws. The director continues his duties as president. Yesterday, he congratulated the cadet team for winning three medals at the World Championships.

The only association that is suspended is that of Costa Rica.

The World Taekwondo Council approved the recommendations of the Member Relations and Development Commission to suspend the Costa Rican Association and establish interim management bodies for both Costa Rica and Mexico, in consultation and cooperation with the respective local sports authorities.

Julio César Chávez Jr. has a clear objective for his fight with YouTuber Jake Paul on June 28 at the Honda Center in California. "I want to dedicate this fight to boxing so that it continues to receive the respect it deserves," he declared in his first face-to-face with the American, broadcast live on DAZN. His opponent, with the irreverent and brash style that characterizes his content on social media, held nothing back and made personal attacks on the Mexican, in addition to expressing his intention to become a world champion.

The son of the legend admitted a few weeks ago that he squandered the prestige he inherited along with his name, a career that promised better places, and threw his own reputation away. Now he's trying to regain his place in the boxing world with the media boost from Paul, whom he accuses of not having a single resounding victory.

"He's never fought anyone like me. Mike Tyson, despite being a great champion, was no longer an active boxer. In this sport, you learn step by step, and he's missing several ," said the boxer, who attended the event accompanied by his father.

In response to the Mexican's repeated comments about his rival, whom he describes as not being a real boxer , he was asked about his reasons for accepting the fight.

He's missing something; he's a youngster who's starting out and is strong. It's not that he doesn't know how to do it. People are interested, and we're even more so, because every boxer is attracted by big purses and wants to be in the big events; and this fight has the ingredients, and we have to respect it.

Fourteen years ago, the Chávez heir seemed to be taking off in a wake that took advantage of the privileges of being the son of the greatest Mexican boxing idol. He was world middleweight champion in 2011, but a year later his reign ended when Argentine Sergio Maravilla Martínez defeated him to regain the WBC belt.

He tells me he has a good reputation, but I don't. I don't know what he's talking about, if I'm a real boxer. To be a world champion, you need discipline, something that isn't required to fight some idiot , the Mexican maintained.

Paul, 28, who defeated Tyson, 58, in 2024 in front of more than 70,000 fans at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in a match that was broadcast live on Netflix, also has a victory over former Brazilian mixed martial arts fighter Anderson Silva, who defeated Chávez Jr. in 2021.

Mexicans love me more than him. I feel like I'll be the home team, and as soon as I beat him, everyone will discredit my victory, but I'm going to expose and humiliate him , Paul emphasized. That's why I'm here, to be a champion and one of the best. From coming from Disney and YouTube to ending up in one of the coolest stories a boxer can have , he added when asked if he would challenge Gilberto Zurdo Ramírez, who was present at the press conference before his fight with Cuban Yuniel Dorticos.

In an attempt to get attention, one can use cheap shots. Paul reached that point by mocking the addictions Junior is in recovery from. "I could beat you and your dad in one night ," he said, pointing directly at Chávez Jr. after repeatedly attacking him.

In the past, I was careless; everyone knows about my excesses. I had a bad life, and that's why I didn't perform. I've been clean for a year and a half, substance-free. Life is very nice when you're healthy, being able to have a good conversation, because many in this profession can't do that anymore. And after so many years of being lazy, I have a great opportunity to come back , the fellow countryman recounted a few weeks ago.

The presence of the Mexican boxing idol did not go unnoticed and he explained that it had been a long time since he had seen such positive physical preparation from his son for a fight.

"He's admired for what he's done, and he's respected for not being a fighter who started young and has somehow garnered worldwide attention. Boxing-wise, if he were my son, I'd have no doubt I'd beat him. Yes, he looks tough, but that doesn't mean anything. In the ring, you need to know how to box and fight ," commented Julio César Chávez Sr.

I find it funny that your dad is speaking for you. I didn't know it was Bring Him to Work Day. You're nothing without him. I promise you, sir, this fight will end like always, with your hands on your face in disappointment.

The Celtics regain their magic and take a 3-2 series lead against the Knicks.

From the editorial staff

La Jornada Newspaper, Thursday, May 15, 2025, p. a12

The reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics regained their mojo and kept their hopes of reaching the Eastern Conference finals alive after beating the New York Knicks 127-102 to cut their series deficit to 3-2.

Derrick White and Jaylen Brown led the Monarchs' offense. White had an unforgettable night at TD Garden with 34 points, three rebounds, and two assists; Brown, meanwhile, had 26 points, eight rebounds, and 12 assists.

In the absence of Jayson Tatum, Brown is the team's current center of gravity. The home team's number 7 was the best player in last year's Finals and excelled in front of his home crowd yesterday.

Payton Pritchard and Jrue Holiday contributed 17 and 14 points for the hosts, respectively.

Another surprise for the Celtics was Luke Kornet; the 7-foot-10 center became a defensive wall with his seven blocks and his intimidating effect on New York's offense.

The game was tied at halftime before the Celtics had a dominant third quarter, leading by 15 points entering the fourth.

Boston held the lead this time, winning by 25 points, and didn't let up late as they had in previous games in the series.

The Celtics were able to overcome the absence of their star player, Tatum, who suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in the closing moments of Game 4. The player was ruled out of the remainder of the playoffs , and his participation in the start of the 2025-26 season is uncertain.

For the Knicks, Josh Hart stood out with 24 points, seven rebounds, and two assists; Jalen Brunson added 22 points, one rebound, and six assists.

Boston came into yesterday's game on the back foot, as no team has come back from 3-1 down since Denver did it twice in 2020. Before that, Cleveland came back against Golden State in the 2016 NBA Finals.

Only 14 times in the league's history have they come from behind in a tie from 3-1 down.

Game six will be played on Friday in New York.
