Concern for Nico Williams, injured in left abductor

Concern for Nico Williams, injured in left abductor

Spain 's brilliant victory against Turkey on Sunday brought with it some bad news: Nico Williams ' injury. The Athletic Bilbao winger suffered an injury in the closing minutes of the first half of the national team's match in Konya and was forced to leave the field in favor of Ferran Torres.

Nico Williams had started for the second time in three days for Spain, against Bulgaria and Turkey. After shining early in the match, he suffered severe pain in his left abductor muscle in the 41st minute, preventing him from continuing.

"Unfortunately, this situation is a shame," lamented Spain coach Luis de la Fuente after the match. "He has a slight discomfort in his groin and he has to undergo tests on Monday, but it seems like a muscular problem," said the Spanish coach, who, despite the 27-match unbeaten streak and the team's play, attempted to send a message of calm.

"We have to instill caution because we know how much football changes from one month to the next in the national teams. This group of people has virtues, they're natural, they won't lose touch with the ground. We select the best footballers, but also good people who, knowing the possibilities they have to achieve very important things, won't let them slip away due to excessive vanity or arrogance. They're humble and eager to improve ," he praised.

Pending the outcome of his medicals, Nico Williams is a doubt for Athletic Bilbao's upcoming La Liga matches : this Saturday at San Mamés against Alavés and on the 20th against Valencia at Mestalla. In between, the Bilbao side will face their Champions League opener on Tuesday the 16th against Arsenal at San Mamés.
