The Mexican artistic swimming team qualified for the free routine final at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.
The members (Regina Alferez, Marla Fernanda Arellano, Miranda Barrera, Itzamary González, Glenda Inzunza, Joana Jiménez, Pamela Nuzhet and Sofía Valenzuela) collected a total of 305.0511 points to place themselves in fifth place in the competition and advance to the final round, which will be held early Sunday morning.
The Chinese team advanced to first place with 338.2167 points, followed by Spain (329.4288), Japan (327.9186) and the United States (314.2542).
Following the retirement of the most experienced ondines, such as Nuria Diosdado and Jessica Sobrino, it has been a challenge for coach Adriana Loftus to keep the tricolor team at the elite level of the sport.
I think there's so much talent in our country, there are very young girls with potential who already have international experience. When we older girls decide to leave, we won't lose the status we've left our sport with,
declared Sobrino, a former acrobat for the national team, a few months ago.
Earlier, the technical duo of Itzamara González and Marla Fernanda Arellano also secured their place in the medal round.
