"There is an attack against Hermosillo police officers," says former commissioner after his resignation

HERMOSILLO, Son. (apro).- An "attack" is behind the investigations targeting multiple officers of the Hermosillo municipal police force, Manuel Emilio Hoyos Díaz asserted, four days after submitting his resignation as head of the force.

"I strongly condemn the attack against my colleagues in the municipal police, which we have suffered for about a year and a half," said the former commissioner through the social network X. "Regarding my resignation, I did so in accordance with what my parents taught me. The reason for it is due to interests outside my person and decisions very far from my reach," he explained.

Hours after Hoyos Díaz's resignation, two municipal police officers under his command were arrested by the Sonora Prosecutor's Office and held in a city jail as a preventive measure. They are accused of abuse of authority and illegal deprivation of liberty.

Investigations are ongoing to clarify what happened in Hermosillo at the end of May, when several citizens reported through various channels that they had been transported from the capital of Sonora to the south, near the municipality of Navojoa, without their consent.

The operation that triggered the investigation, which coincides chronologically with Hoyos Díaz's resignation, was allegedly carried out by the municipal government to "clean up" the historic center in preparation for the annual celebration of the city's founding. This represents one of the lines of investigation by the Prosecutor's Office that led to the arrest of the suspects behind bars.

Although the former commissioner's message refers to an "attack" and does not indicate its origin, there are recent precedents that suggest a conflict between the municipal government, originally from the PRI (National Action Party), and the Sonora state government, currently a Morena party.

Mayor Antonio Astiazarán himself spoke about the issue hours after state prosecutor Rómulo Salas Chávez made the investigations public. "There are those who, for some reason unknown to me, dare to anticipate the results of investigations that have not yet been conducted," he said.

That same day, during the dedication ceremony for the state-funded renovation of Hermosillo's main municipal market, the mayor emphasized in his speech that if "governments at different levels confront each other, it's the citizens who lose."

Manuel Emilio Hoyos Díaz has evidence to support his claims, according to what he said through X, but he added that he will present them to the public and through legal channels only "if necessary."
