Shock for Werder Bremen: Weiser suffers cruciate ligament tear

Shock for Werder Bremen: Weiser suffers cruciate ligament tear

Bundesliga club Werder Bremen will be without Mitchell Weiser for months. The right-back tore the cruciate ligament in his right knee during training on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old had experienced knee problems during the afternoon session and subsequently underwent an MRI scan – which led to the grim diagnosis. The necessary treatment and therapy options will be finalized in the coming days, it was announced.

"It's a blow for us both personally and athletically. I'm incredibly sorry for Mitch."

"Such news hurts us all deeply. It's a blow for us both personally and athletically. I'm incredibly sorry for Mitch," said Bremen's new coach Horst Steffen. "We will now do everything we can, as a team and as a club, to ensure he recovers as quickly as possible and can return to the team."

Major injury concerns even before the start of the season

For Steffen, Weiser's absence is the latest personnel setback. Striker Marvin Ducksch suffered a calf muscle injury in the first training session of the preseason, midfielder Jens Stage is suffering from a stress reaction in his metatarsal, and Olivier Deman is currently sidelined with an ankle injury. Werder are currently without their three top scorers from last season's Bundesliga campaign.

Werder Bremen will kick off the 2025/2026 Bundesliga season with an away game against Eintracht Frankfurt on August 23 (3:30 p.m.). One week earlier, the Green-Whites' first competitive match will be the first round of the DFB Cup against Arminia Bielefeld .
