Werder Bremen celebrated their first win of the Bundesliga season. Coach Horst Steffen's team deservedly beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-0 (2-0). Man of the night for SVW was new signing Samuel Mbangula.
The Belgian scored the first goal himself with a stunning goal (15'), then set up Jens Stage (26'), and finally won the penalty, which Romano Schmid converted to make it 3-0 (74'). Last-minute signing Victor Boniface also performed brilliantly, setting up Justin Njinmah's final goal (81').
The Green-Whites want to build on their good performance at Borussia Park next Saturday when SC Freiburg comes to the Weserstadion (3:30 p.m., in the NDR Livecenter ).
Mbangula countered the tense opening quarter of an hour in Mönchengladbach with a dream goal: 18 meters from Moritz Nicolas's goal, the new signing from Juventus Turin received the ball in a half-right position, took a few steps, and blasted it with his right foot onto the underside of the crossbar and over the line. Nicolas had no chance; the 21-year-old's first Bundesliga goal was an extremely beautiful one (15').
And while they were already leading, Bremen really enjoyed scoring goals: Mbangula, set free by Schmid, actually missed the shot from eleven meters out, but then showed excellent vision and passed to Stage. The Dane laid the ball out and fired a powerful right-footed shot into the bottom left corner - 2-0 (26').
Gladbach did manage two decent shots through Robin Hack (37th and 39th minutes), but SVW's halftime lead was entirely justified, as the northern Germans were significantly more aggressive and determined. The largely disoriented "Fohlen" were escorted to the dressing room by their fans, whooping their heels.
Schmid and Njinmah make everything clear for SVWAnd in the second half, the visitors continued to do well to give Borussia's fans no hope of improvement. Werder defended with concentration against the largely harmless and unimaginative efforts, occasionally delivering offensive pinpricks. Such as in the 57th minute, when new right-back Yukinari Sugawara fired a shot from around 25 meters out, and the ball deflected dangerously towards goal.
Midway through the second period, Steffen's team began to face criticism for not closing the deal early: Marco Grüll shot just wide to the left (68th minute), Sugawara was denied by Nicolas from close range (69th minute). And suddenly—just a few seconds later and completely out of nowhere—Felix Agu had to clear a Rocco Reitz header off the line for his already beaten keeper Mio Backhaus.
The northern Germans survived the scare – and then, with a slight delay, sealed the victory. Mbangula was fouled, Schmid grabbed the ball, and confidently converted the penalty (74'). The deciding factor, even though Werder had another chance to score. Boniface, who had just been substituted on, played a beautiful through ball to the onrushing Njinmah. The substitute chipped the ball past Nicols with a delicate touch and into the net. The final touch to a day of joy for the Green-Whites at the "Foals."
