FC Bayern Munich beat world champions Chelsea 3-1 to kick off their Champions League campaign, dominating their opponents at times. The Munich team didn't even lose control when half of their defense had to be replaced.

27 minutes had been played in the Munich Arena when it dawned on Chelsea's visitors that this Wednesday evening could end unpleasantly for them. An opposing player set up the ball on the penalty spot and everything about him said he had shot on goal from this position before. The shooter moved as routinely as a surgeon before his 25,000th hip operation. He arched his back and stared at the ball. Then he took two deep breaths that made his chest visibly rise and fall. And when he thundered the ball into the net at rocket speed for FC Bayern's 24th penalty goal, Chelsea realized that Harry Kane might not be Hoffenheim's Tim Lemperle after all.
