European Basketball Championship 2025: Start, schedule and broadcast on TV & stream

Europe's largest basketball tournament will be held for the 42nd time in summer 2025. After the women's European Basketball Championship took place in June, the men's event will follow just over two months later – and Germany will be there. The team, led by captain Dennis Schröder and stars Franz Wagner and Daniel Theis, is among the extended group of favorites.

The German Basketball Federation (DBB) has only won the European Championship once so far: in 1993, Germany crowned themselves European champions at the European Championships on home soil, defeating Russia in the final. This year, the tournament will take place in four countries – Latvia, Finland, Cyprus, and Poland.

The German team is aiming for the second European Championship title in its history. As the reigning world champions – they won the World Cup in Indonesia in 2023 – the team is definitely one of the hottest contenders. The team also impressed at the Olympic Games, finishing fourth, but narrowly missed a medal in the semifinal against Serbia. The Serbs, led by NBA superstar Nikola Jokic, are also among the favorites.

With the end of the tenure of successful coach Gordon Herbert, under whom Germany achieved their international breakthrough, an era ended. Spaniard Álex Mumbrú has been on the sidelines since August 2024.

Following the COVID-19-related postponement of the 2021 European Championship, European basketball returns to its now established four-year cycle with the 2025 tournament. This cycle was only introduced prior to the 2021 European Championship – previously, the tournament was held every two years. From August 27 to September 14, 2025, 24 nations will compete for the title at the 42nd Men's European Basketball Championship . This major sporting event will thus span almost three weeks.

Instead of a central venue, the organizers are once again opting for a cross-border concept: The preliminary round will take place in four different cities – each group will play in its own arena :

  • Riga (Latvia) – Xiaomi Arena: 11,200 spectators
  • Tampere (Finland) – Nokia Arena: 13,500 spectators
  • Katowice (Poland) – Spodek Arena: 11,036 spectators
  • Limassol (Cyprus) – Spyros Kyprianou Athletic Center: 9,600 spectators

Each of these venues will host one of the four preliminary round groups, A to D. From the round of 16 to the final, the knockout matches will be played centrally. The venue for the final round is the Xiaomi Arena in Latvia. The 2025 European Championship will be decided here on September 14.
