Dutchman Simonis new coach of VfL Wolfsburg

Dutchman Simonis new coach of VfL Wolfsburg

VfL Wolfsburg will enter the upcoming Bundesliga season with Paul Simonis as coach. The 40-year-old Dutchman joins the club from Go Ahead Eagles and has signed a contract until 2027.

The Lower Saxony club announced this on Thursday morning. In addition to long-time goalkeeping coach Pascal Formann, Simonis' coaching team will include Tristan Berghuis and Martin Darneviel, who are also joining the Wolves from Go Ahead Eagles, as well as Peter van der Veen, the former coach of the Dutch U19 national team.

Christiansen: "Fits perfectly into the requirements profile"

"It was an intensive process, and at the end of it all, we decided on Paul Simonis. He fits our requirements profile perfectly," said Peter Christiansen, VfL Sporting Director. "Paul works very meticulously in all areas; he shares the same vision and ideas, both in terms of content and structure, regarding how we want to present ourselves on the pitch in the future, how we want to reorient VfL Wolfsburg with fresh impetus, and at the same time consistently advance its development – from the first team to the youth academy," added the Dane.

Wolfsburg must pay transfer fee to Deventer

This brings VfL's search for a successor to Ralph Hasenhüttl to an end. The Wolves parted ways with the Austrian two games before the end of the last season. U19 coach Daniel Bauer was on the bench for the remaining games. Simonis is now expected to lead VfL into the European Cup, if possible.

The 40-year-old took over Go Ahead Eagles from Deventer last summer and sensationally led them to a cup victory. It was the club's first title since 1933. Since Simonis was under contract with the Dutch club until 2027, VfL had to pay a transfer fee.

VfL for Simoni's second position as head coach

"The discussions I had with Peter Christiansen, Sebastian Schindzielorz, and also with Sebastian Rudolph were very good and comprehensive at a high level. This immediately gave me the feeling that this decision was the right step," Simonis explained.

For the 40-year-old, VfL Wolfsburg is his first international assignment and his second job as head coach. Before taking over as coach of Go Ahead Eagles, he worked as an assistant at the Deventer-based club and at SC Heerenveen.
