(dpa/sda) FC Bayern Munich extended its opening winning streak in the Champions League. Coach Vincent Kompany's team beat Club World Cup winners Chelsea 3-1 (2-1) at their Allianz Arena on Matchday 1. The German record champions have now won their last 22 opening matches in Europe's premier club competition.

In front of 75,000 fans, Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah put the ball into his own net in the 20th minute following a fierce cross from Michael Olise. Just a few minutes later, Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane was fouled in the penalty area. The Englishman converted the penalty himself (27th minute). Cole Palmer almost immediately pulled one back for the London club (29th minute). After the break, Kane made it 3-1 (63rd minute).
The German champions' stated goal is a direct berth in the round of 16. To achieve this, they need a place in the top eight of the 36-team league stage. Bayern's next Champions League match will take place in Cyprus against Paphos FC (September 30).
Inter lives up to favorites' role in AmsterdamInter started the Champions League season just as confidently as Bayern. With Yann Sommer and Manuel Akanji in the starting lineup, the Milanese won 2-0 at Ajax Amsterdam. After the defensive debacle in the league against Juventus, Inter defended very solidly against a disappointing Ajax.
The two goals shortly before and after the break came in virtually identical – and incredibly simple – ways: Hakan Calhanoglu's corner, Marcus Thuram's header. The Dutch, who are on average four years younger, had no answer. Only shortly before the 1-0 goal did Sommer have to save from the lone attacking Mika Godts, and he did so coolly.
Liverpool and Atlético Madrid provided the biggest spectacle on Wednesday evening. The English champions were on target early and late in their 3-2 home victory. Scotsman Andrew Robertson and Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah secured a 2-0 lead within the first six minutes, and defensive leader Virgil van Dijk sealed the victory after the Spanish equalized in the 92nd minute. Four different players scored for defending champions PSG in their 4-0 win over Atalanta Bergamo.
